How to write Japanese Telephone Numbers

Here are a few tips to help you write Japanese telephone numbers.

Cellphone numbers

Numbers for cell phones in Japan usually have 11 digits. The first 3 digits are usually written in brackets and a dash “-” is placed between seventh and eighth digits. For example:
(080) 5553-2222
(090) 3331-3322

Land-line Numbers

Numbers for land lines usually have 7 digits and are written with a dash “-”after the first 3 digits. This main number is preceded by a 2 or 3 digit city code enclosed in a bracket. Examples are below.

City code: (03) and (075)
Number: 555-2222

Therefore the above Japanese telephone numbers would be written like this:
(03) 555-2222
(075) 555-2222
