Maiko in Gion

I love strolling around the geisha district in Gion. It is has a quiet, elegant charm.

Ever so often if you are lucky you will see a maiko hurrying off to her appointment.

A maiko is an apprentice who is studying and working to become a geisha. She also entertain customers by playing different instruments, singing and performing different traditional dances.

I was quite lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

Although maikos are wearing many layers some of which are quite heavy, they still manage to move very quickly and almost silently.
